Question: Is it a Country break in the City or a City break in the country?
Answer: Both!
Puffing Billy Cottage is situated within the Tyne Riverside Countryside Park so is surrounded by beautiful countryside yet is located just 15 minutes drive from the centre of the historic city of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is named in memory of the oldest surviving steam railway locomotive in the world (original in the Science Museum, London; replica at Beamish Museum) which travelled through Newburn from 1814 to 1860. The engine was named after the inventor William Hedley, who was born in Newburn.
This south facing two bedroom cottage, originally built in 1889, has been fully refurbished; much care has been taken to ensure the character of the cottage has been retained to provide visitors with comfortable accommodation of an excellent quality. It is tastefully decorated and fully equipped with modern appliances and facilities. A French door in the lounge maximises the light and leads on to a decked area above the garden - a sunny haven for relaxation. A patio garden to the back of the cottage provides another opportunity to enjoy al fresco dining.
Puffing Billy also benefits from being situated directly on Hadrian's Way and the Sustrans National Cycle Way no. 72 so is ideal for walking/hiking/running and cycling as well as providing an excellent base for exploring the whole range of attractions available in this part of the country, the closest being the birthplace of the railway pioneer, George Stephenson, a pleasant walk away. The vibrant city of Newcastle, the picturesque and historic counties of Durham and Northumberland plus the extensive shopping facilities of the Gateshead Metro Centre are all within easy reach.
The cottage enjoys the added bonus of being 5 minutes walk away from an award winning Pub and micro brewery which serves great locally crafted ales and meals all day.
